Free Information for Health Care Providers

Abuse and neglect of elders is a growing problem in the United States. As physicians, you are in a unique position to assess elder patients for abuse, alter risk factors and refer to services.

This free informational brochure about recognizing, responding to and reporting elder abuse and neglect was created specifically for health care professionals. Please fill out the request below if you would like us to mail you a free color version of the SANE informational brochure.

In addition, we have created a free online self-learning curriculum with detailed information on elder abuse and neglect.

Recognizing and Responding to Elder Abuse and Neglect

This free online self-learning curriculum includes 2 hours CME credit for:

• 4 modules on recognizing and reporting elder abuse and neglect
• 5 original videos featuring local survivors of elder abuse
• Evidence-based recommendations for assessment and management
• Self-assessment and evaluation tools

The objectives are to help health care professionals:

1. Assume that some patients are experiencing mistreatment
2. Recognize high risk situations that might lead to or indicate abuse or neglect
3. Routinely Assess patients for mistreatment and conditions that lead to higher risk
4. Document history and exam findings to assist with investigation and services
5. Report suspected abuse and neglect to the MCDA or local law enforcement

Accreditation: The Medical College of Wisconsin is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Designation of credit: The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) designates the modules for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit ©. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

To access the online learning modules please fill out and submit this request. You will then be emailed a guest user account and details on accessing the modules.

The SANE curriculum is part of a community-academic partnership between the Milwaukee County Department on Aging and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Supported by a grant from the Healthier Wisconsin Partnership, a component of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
