Additional Medical College of Wisconsin
Institute for Health and Society
The Institute for Health and Society was established in July 2010 to reflect the increased role it will take in College's public and community health and clinical and translational sciences efforts. Its mission is to improve health and advance health equity through community and academic partnerships. The Institute for Health and Society consists of seven divisions and multiple subdivisions: Administration, Center for Bioethics and Medical Humanities, Community Engagement, Division of Biostatistics, Education, Global Health, Health Equity and Urban Clinical Care Partnerships.
The Division of Biostatistics
The Division of Biostatistics of the Medical College of Wisconsin offers a PhD Program as well as comprehensive statistical consulting, computing and data entry services for clients within the Medical College, and from other academic institutions, government agencies and private industry. The Division of Biostatistics has state of the art statistical software packages and computing facilities.
The Biostatistical Consulting Center of the Division of Biostatistics offers statistical support to biomedical investigators. This support includes assistance with design and analysis of clinical trials, design and analysis of observational studies, design and analysis of surveys, assistance with public databases, sample size and power calculations and data analysis and interpretation. Our faculty and staff have extensive experience in the preparation of NIH, NSF, Department of Education, HERSA, Healthier Wisconsin, and VA Grants. We have also helped prepare proposals for a number of private research foundations.
Epidemiology Data Service Center
The Epidemiology Data Service Center (EDSC) is the Medical College of Wisconsin’s centralized resource for secondary health and demographic data. The EDSC also provides expertise in the use of spatial data and geographic information systems, or GIS. For more information contact Tom Chelius, MS, EDSC Coordinator, at (414) 955-8040.
Center for Patient Care and Outcomes Research
The Center for Patient Care and Outcomes Research came into existence in January 2001. The Center is an interdisciplinary group of health services researchers collaborating in a diverse array of subject areas. The purposes of the Center are to conduct research on patient care services and related health outcomes, to facilitate a supportive environment for MCW investigators new to this area, to determine the need for and recruit new faculty in targeted methodologic areas, and to sponsor a health services research seminar series as a forum for the exchange of ideas.
Institution Review Boards (IRB)
Medical College of Wisconsin is authorized to perform research involving human subjects under a Multiple Project Assurance (MPA) Contract negotiated with the Office of Human Research Protection (OHRP) of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This MPA contains the institutional policies and procedures for the conduct of research involving human subjects. The MCW Institution Review Boards (IRB) of the Office of Research, Technology, and Informatics are committed to ensuring that all research activities involving human subjects comply with the requirements of the MPA.
All research conducted by Medical College of Wisconsin faculty, residents, and students must be reviewed and approved by the principal investigator's affiliated institution prior to data collection for the project. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin IRB is responsible for review of projects involving children (minors) regardless of the investigator's primary affiliated institution.
