Welcome to the Office of Clinical Informatics Web Site

Clinical informatics is a term that describes the use of computer technologies to create systems that help us manage medical information.

For several years, the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert & Community Health (a partnership of Froedtert Hospital and Community Memorial Hospital of Menomonee Falls) have been working together to address the restructuring of our existing clinical technology systems.

The organizations have used a variety of systems to register patients, schedule appointments and share vital data. Because these information systems have no common database, delays and errors in communication were hard to avoid.

To address these critical issues, we have been working with Epic Systems, a leader in information technology, to build a state-of-the-art Clinical Information System that:

  • Creates a single registration and scheduling system for Froedtert & Medical College clinics
  • Increases access by physicians to shared clinical information
  • Provides an electronic medical record (the Epic Electronic Health Record) to replace the paper charts that have been used in the past.
  • Improves communications between clinical staff
  • Assures security and privacy
  • Includes a digital diagnostic imaging storage and retrieval system
  • Reduces the possibility of errors

OCI is a member of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert & Community Health interdisciplinary care provider team. A key focus of the OCI's support and optimization activities is the Epic Electronic Health Record (EHR).

The OCI Optimization Team collaborates closely with the Froedtert Hospital Office of Clinical Informatics, and Froedtert Information Technology to support the information needs of the Medical College of Wisconsin's clinical practice. Our goal is to employ information technology to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care delivered by Medical College of Wisconsin physicians and clinics.

This project demonstrates our commitment to quality care, partnerships, technological leadership, customer service and patient safety and does it within a secure system that safeguards each patient's confidentiality.

Robust information systems are crucial to maintaining the success of today's health care organizations. The use of new, innovative systems technology will have an enormous impact on productivity, efficiency and patient safety at the Medical College of Wisconsin and Froedtert & Community Health.
