Karla A. Balko, MS, CCC-A
Audiologist
Koss Cochlear Implant Program

Karla Balko's area of expertise is in cochlear implantation and aural rehabilitation for children and adults with hearing loss, with a specialty in pediatrics. Helping recipients discover or rediscover the sense of hearing is infinitely rewarding--from working through the challenges to celebrating their joys.

Ms. Balko currently works primarily with children, their families, educators, and therapists, and enjoys being part of a team approach to optimize each child's potential. She has extensive experience with all cochlear implant devices available in the United States including those from Cochlear Americas, Advanced Bionics, and Med-El Corporation and has participated in most of their FDA Clinical Trials. She also has expertise in assistive device fitting for adult and pediatric populations. She has participated in numerous school in-services, classroom observation/consultations, and Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) and Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings.

Ms. Balko has practiced for 19 years as a certified clinical audiologist and 15 years in the field of cochlear implants at nationally recognized academic centers. Over the years, she has worked with over 250 cochlear implant recipients of all ages and their families. Prior to joining the College, Ms. Balko served as coordinator of the Cochlear Implant Program and the Rehabilitation Program in one of the largest implant centers in Seattle, Washington. She played a leadership role in starting the Cochlear Implant Program at Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona in 1990. She has participated in course instruction at the university level and has spoken locally and nationally on various topics regarding cochlear implants.
