Evaluation Process


cochlear implant recipientInformation about our program and cochlear implantation can be found on our website or can be mailed to the patient. Please click on the cochlear implant packet link or e-mail: cochlear.implant@mcw.edu to get a cochlear implant packet. The packet will need to be completed and mailed to our center along with all available hearing tests. Once this information is received, you will be contacted to schedule the necessary appointments. These appointments include:

Consultation with the Cochlear Implant Audiologist

  • Audiologic and speech perception testing
  • Discuss how the cochlear implant works
  • Explain the latest technology
  • Discuss factors that can affect the candidate's performance with a cochlear implant
  • Discuss realistic post-implant expectations
  • Review the necessary post-implant follow-up appointments

CT Scan of the Temporal Bone

Medical/Otologic Exam with the Surgeon

  • History and physical examination
  • Review and interpretation of CT and/or MRI studies
  • Review of audiologic testing data
  • Medical diagnosis of the hearing loss
  • Discussion of appropriateness of candidacy
  • Review of the surgical procedure

 
Additional Evaluations as Needed

Cochlear Implant Decision Making

  • After the testing is completed and the candidate has a good understanding of the process and realistic expectations, a decision regarding the surgery is made by the candidate along with the cochlear implant team.
  • A device discussion with the audiologist will take place for you to choose which device you will be implanted with.
