The artificial larynx (AL) is a mechanical device that produces sound vibrations that are transmitted through neck tissue or directed into the mouth through a small tube. The sound vibrations are formed into speech by "mouthing" the words. The AL user can learn to use the device fairly quickly but are sometimes disappointed by the mechanical sound of their voice. The AL can be used as the primary means of communication or as an alternative method.
