Community Education

One of the primary goals of the Center for Communication and Swallowing Disorders is to enhance the community's awareness of communication and swallowing disorders.

Programs are presented by a speech-language pathologist, an otolaryngologist (a physician who specializes in ear, nose and throat disorders), or both.

Although the programs can be presented at Froedtert Memorial Lutheran Hospital or the Medical College of Wisconsin, they are typically presented at a location more convenient to the listeners, such as a school, church, or meeting hall.

Presentations are tailored to the special interests of the audience and can include such diverse topics as:

  • Care of the voice
  • Aging voice
  • Professional voice (i.e. teachers, singers, lawyers)
  • Identification of voice disorders
  • What to do when a voice disorder is suspected
  • Children's vocal demands and voice disorders
  • Breathing problems in athletes
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Communication in the head and neck cancer patient
  • Facial paralysis
  • Chronic cough
  • Stuttering
  • Paradoxical vocal fold dysfunction

Groups interested in a presentation should contact the Center for Communication and Swallowing Disorders and discuss topics of interest with a speech-language pathologist. Call 414.805.5588.

Support Groups:  Speech-language pathologists also coordinate or are involved in patient support groups related to laryngectomy, head and neck cancer treatment, and spasmodic dysphonia.
