8th World Congress for Microcirculation held in Milwaukee
in August

Oct. 2007 CVC UPBEAT - The 8th World Congress for Microcirculation was held Aug. 15-19 at the Midwest Airlines Center in downtown Milwaukee. This was the first time this event, which occurs at four-five year intervals, was held in the United States since 1991, and the first time it was held in Wisconsin.

The Medical College of Wisconsin hosted the event in conjunction with the Microcirculatory Society. More than 500 people, representing 30 countries from six continents, attended.

Julian H. Lombard, PhD, Professor of Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, served as chair of the planning committee. Other Medical College faculty and staff members on the executive planning committee include: Andrew S. Greene, PhD, Professor of Physiology and Director of the National Center for Proteomics Research and Development and the Biotechnology and Bioengineering Center; Diane Munzenmaier, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology; Carol Moreno-Quinn, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor of Physiology; Marie Schulte, PhD, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology; Mary Pat Kunert, RN, PhD, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee School of Nursing; and Gregory McQuestion, Information Services Manager in Physiology. Weihong Jin, Web Developer in the Human and Molecular Genetics Center, served as the event Web Master.

Other highlights from the World Congress include:

  • Judah Folkman, MD, Professor of Cell Biology at Harvard Medical School and Director of the Vascular Biology Department at Children's Hospital in Boston, was the keynote speaker.
  • There were five plenary lectures; 22 symposia, with four-to-five speakers each; and 57 participants from MCW. 
  • More than 300 posters were presented
  • Merimond International Proceedings is publishing the proceedings of the World Congress. The abstracts from the meeting were published in the latest volume of Microcirculation.
