Continuing its goal of supporting life-saving heart research at the Medical College of Wisconsin, the thirteenth annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Club Run & Walk is set for Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Wil-O-Way Underwood Clubhouse, 10602 Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa. The event includes an eight-kilometer USATF certified run, and a two-mile fun run or walk through one of Milwaukee County's most scenic parks.
Registration is $17 for individuals until February 1, and $20 after that date. The fee for families of four is $50 until February 1, and $60 after that date. Free registration is available to any person who brings in $35 or more in sponsorships on race day. Companies, schools or organizations with 10 or more participants qualify for the team rate of $15/person. All registration forms and payment must be submitted in one envelope with a cover letter on company/school/organization letterhead. Deadline for team registration is January 19, 2009. Participants will be able to warm up after the run/walk with music from a live band plus a bowl of signature Cullen Family & Friends Chili. Athletic trainers and free health screenings will also be available. Medals are awarded for the top three 8K runners in 13 age groups, and trophies for the overall male and female run winners.
The event is held in memory of Steve Cullen, a former Milwaukee alderman, who died in 1995 at age 40 of a heart attack. His father, at age 41, and two brothers, ages 53 and 51, also died of heart disease. Last year, the event raised $17,000 for heart disease research at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Race day registration begins at 8:30 a.m. for the 10 a.m. race, sponsored by the Badgerland Striders and the Cullen family.
