MCW Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences Headlights Winter 2023 - Save the Date for Research Day June 16, 2023

Each June, otolaryngology faculty, residents, advanced practice providers, and ancillary teams gather to celebrate a year of research accomplishments. A faculty member’s research program is highlighted, and residents compete for best clinical/basic science presentation and manuscript. Also, an honorary accomplished guest speaker is invited to participate. In 2023, Sydney C. Butts, MD will honor the department with her attendance and presentation on June 16.

Dr. Sydney Butts is currently an Associate Professor and the Interim Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University in Brooklyn, NY.  She also serves as Chief of the Division of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at University Hospital Downstate and Kings County Hospital Center.

More about the Guest Speaker, Dr. Sydney Butts

Dr. Butts earned a BA in the History of Science and Medicine concentration at Yale University, followed by her medical degree at the Yale University School of Medicine, graduating cum laude.  She completed a residency in otolaryngology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center followed by fellowship training in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery at SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse, NY. Dr. Butts is Board certified in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery and is a diplomate of the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Her clinical focus includes the management of congenital craniofacial anomalies, adult and pediatric maxillofacial trauma, local/regional flap surgery especially for reconstruction in skin cancer patients and functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty.

Dr. Butts has written several book chapters and journal articles, presented research at national academic meetings, and been a guest faculty and invited lecturer on multiple reconstructive topics nationally and internationally. She has served on committees of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. She was a member of the item-writing task force and has served as an oral examiner for the American Board of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Butts has been a faculty member for the AO-CMF, since 2008 participating in instructional courses on the management of facial fractures for the AO-CMF in the United States, Canada, and Asia.

Service, volunteerism, and mentoring have also been important priorities for Dr. Butts. She has worked internationally on surgical humanitarian missions to perform facial plastic and reconstructive surgery in underserved areas of the world, including Vietnam, Rwanda and Liberia. She has mentored many medical students and worked with several medical student groups to provide guidance about careers in otolaryngology and residency, including service on the diversity task force of the Society of University Otolaryngologists.
