MCW Otolaryngology and Communication Sciences Headlights Winter 2023 - Residency Program Updates

In November 2022, Adam Thompson-Harvey, MD joined the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) 2022-2023 Board of Directors as a resident member. In this role, Adam is the sole resident representative on this national board. Adam originally became involved in the AAMC as a medical student in the Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) and then served as a member of the Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR) for the Society of University Otolaryngologists-Head and Neck Surgeons (SUO).

Ken Akakpo, MD and Adam Thompson-Harvey, MD received grants in 2022 from The Panacea Financial Foundation. The Foundation is a doctor-founded bank that serves doctors and doctors in training by providing financial means intended to help offset burdens during post graduate training. 

Dr. Ken Akakpo was also chosen by the American Academy of Otolaryngology‐Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) Humanitarian Endeavors Committee to receive a humanitarian travel grant. This grant will offset expenses for Ken’s humanitarian outreach January 25 - February 9, 2023, to lbajay, Aklan in the Philippines. He joined Dr. Chris Long (MD ’96, GME ’01) in this endeavor.

Anna Berezovsky, MD was awarded the 2022 American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO) mini mentorship to Children’s Minnesota to shadow for three days. Anna may pursue pediatric otolaryngology with a focus on craniofacial surgery, in which Minnesota offers extensive training. 

Kaleigh Stabenau, MD and Adam Thompson-Harvey, MD were recognized as 2021-2022 Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospital, Inc. (MCWAH) Research and Quality Award Winners. Kaleigh’s paper was entitled, ‘RNA Sequencing and Pathways Analyses of Middle Ear Epithelia from Patients with Otitis Media,’ and Adam’s was on ‘Perceptions of Otolaryngology Residency Among Students Underrepresented in Medicine.’

Ryan Puccia, MD was awarded the Dr. and Mrs. Thomas M. Kidder Resident Mentor Award at the graduation ceremony in June of 2022.

Resident Compliment Increase

The otolaryngology residency complement will increase by one on July 1, 2023. This growth takes the program from a 3-3-3-3-3 complement (15 residents) moving towards a 4-3-4-3-4 residency complement (18 residents) by 2028. The expansion brings with it new opportunities for the program that will create a positive impact on the resident’s educational experience.
