Biography
After graduating from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN, I returned to the Midwest for medical school at the University of Chicago, where I also completed a residency in internal medicine. From there I have migrated steadily northwards, first completing a year as chief resident at Mercy Hospital, a University of Chicago affiliate, and then pursuing a rheumatology fellowship at Northwestern University. I stayed on for an extra year to complete a T32 training grant, during which I developed a clinical and research focus in vasculitis.
Currently, I am doing the (much discouraged!) even split of patient care, research, and teaching. From a patient care perspective, I am the medical director of the Vasculitis Program, run the Fast Track GCA Clinic, and serve on the Innovative Therapies P&T committee. I also staff a general rheumatology clinic and have always been a generalist at heart! On the educational side, I am an associate program director for both the rheumatology fellowship and the internal medicine residency. I am also the block director for the medical school hematology/immunology course and love teaching all levels of medical trainees. My research interests include clinical trials in vasculitis, “big data” epidemiology, and meta-research (i.e. researching research!). I am currently an Associate Editor of the journal Rheumatology and host the Evidence Based Rheumatology podcast.
In my off hours I like to spend time outdoors with my wife and three kids. I am also a hobby-enthusiast (always looking for another skill to learn!) and enjoy cooking, building things, and growing flowers/veggies in our gardens.
