ExCEL:

Excellence in Clinical 

Education and Leadership

 ExCEL participants complete a series of semester-long modules focused on teaching and technology; curriculum development; measurement and evaluation; and educational leadership and scholarship. Each module requires completion of a project aligned with their respective division and departmental priorities. Please see below for a brief description of the modules offered.

Leading Your Career (Feb 08-June 08) 
This Module will allow participants to “clear the desk” of an educational project that has been waiting to be completed. It will also assist in advancing careers through the creation of educational products: Individual Learning Plan, Educator’s Portfolio and CV.
 
ANGEL Module  (Sept 07-Jan 08)
This module will focus on the use of ANGEL and online curriculum development.  Participants will learn how to effectively use ANGEL as well as the principals of curriculum development.
 

Evaluation Module (Feb- June 07)
This module will help paricipants to determine the value or worth of our new educational initiatives which will enable you to determine how to improve your initiatives as they are occurring, demonstrate the outcomes of specific teaching, educational initiatives or programs for ACGME, LCME and other accediting bodies, and to share the results of our educational innovations with other medical educators through peer reviewed dissemination consistent with the principles of scholarship.  You will develop an evaluation plan, talk to stakeholders, design/collect/analyze/and report the findings specific to one evaluation.

Teaching Module
(Sept 06- Jan 07)
This module will focus on teaching strategies such teaching in the patient's presence, feedback, and agenda setting.  Guest speaker Ann Woodworth, MA will be doing a presentation on performing art.  Participants will learn about professionalism and communication.  They will be able to create a learning portfolio focused on teaching that will provide experience and perspectives.  The portfolio will include a learning contract, a plan, inclusions and critical teaching incident reports along with analysis.
 
Educational Measurement (Feb- June 06)
Partipants will learn how to design, implement and assess the psychometric properties of a range of assessment tools including those emphasized by the ACGME in their "tool book" for residents ranging from written tests, observationsal methods, to performance based assessments.  Discussion of basic concepts such as definition of measurement, types of numbers scales, and basic assumptions required for all assessments.  Participants will be expected to develop a learner assessment tool, pilot, gather preliminary data, and report on its reliability and validity.  Emphasis will be on virtual and human silmulations using the New Standardized Teaching & Assessment Resource (STAR) or Pediatric Sim Center.
 
Curriculum Development (Sept 05-Jan 06)
Partipants will be expected to complete the design on an educational program for medical students, residents, or CME.  The initial session will focus on problem identification and needs assessment throughlearner and outcome/impact objectives and eductaional strategies/methods.  Each session will involve hands on worksheets focused on your planned educational experience, to enable you to receive on-going feedback about your project.  Each participant will complete an assessment of administrative resources and organizational issues to identify factors that may derail your project.  MCW's medical student curriculum structure and opportunities for new curriculum issuse will be reviewed as well as specialty specific opportunities.
 
Leading your Academic Career (Feb-June 05)
Participants will be expected to complete a current project associated with their personal/professional acedemic success story and incorporate this success into writing.  The project will be aligned with participant;s priorities, department, and scholarship.  During the developing/enhancing your personal/professional skills and charcteristics associated with academic success.  In particular the sessions will focus on defining academic career goals, negotiation skills to help you obtain time/resources needed to obtain those goals (including what is/is not negotiable for you and your department) time management, annual performance reviews, CVs/EPs, and colleague networks.
 
Online Curriculum Development (Sept-Jan 05)
The purpose of this module to teach online curriculum development using Angel as the platform.  Faculty will learn how to create a course in Angel and how to use many of Angel's features.  Some of the features include creating a syllabus, course content and presentation, design, motivating the learner,uploading files, polls and surveys, different forms of media, assessment, creating a quiz and how to get the scores.  
 
The Practice and Profession of Teaching (Feb-June 04)
The purpose of this module is to introduce all participants to various effective methods of teaching (lecture, demonstration, small group, writing, clinical teaching scripts), with a focus on teaching within 2 of the ACGME competencies: Professionalism and Systems based practice. The plan is to produce a collection of the projects at the end which will be a compendium of teaching strategies centered on cases, and which can be disseminated as examples of how to address these competencies. 

Educational Evaluation (Sept-Jan 04)
This module is deigned to systematically designed educational evaluation will provide information that will enable you to determine how to improve your educational initiatives as they are occurring, to demonstrate the outcomes of specific educational initiatives or programs for ACGME, LCME and other accrediting bodies and to share the results of our educational innovations with other medical educators through publications and presentations.

Educational Leadership and Scholarship (Feb-June 03)
Participants will update their own CVs, develop educators' portfolios, refine their professional academic skills (e.g. collegial networks), and enhance skills in leadership/management and writing.  
 
Measurement and Evaluation (Sept-Jan 03)
In developing a measurement or evaluation tool for their own curriculum project or an educational program evaluation, participants will master basic psychometric principles and how to collect "evidence that matters".  

Curriculum Development (Feb-June 02)
Employing a systematic instructional design approach, participants will design and implement a "planned educational experience." Main components: problem identification, needs assessment, goals and objectives, and curriculum plan.
