Reach Out and Read Great Milwaukee volunteers have a love for books and a genuine interest in children. Our program is designed to reach children at three urban health clinics, which serve children living in underserved areas. In each clinic waiting room, community volunteers engage children with books by reading aloud, listening to children read, eliciting children's interest, and modeling book-related interactions for parents. While the volunteers read to the children, they are setting a good example for the parents on the importance of reading to a child and are helping to plant the seeds of literacy early. Volunteer Comments: MLK: "One child with a deaf mother was not used to being read to. He was apprehensive at first, but he warmed up and began to participate after two stories." DHC: "Very nice atmosphere, everything is so organized. I'm going to enjoy coming each Wednesday to read to the children. I like the selection of books, especially the big books."
