CME Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin
Mission Statement
The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) is a private, free-standing college with a public Mission: excellence in patient care, education, research and community service. Recognizing that the promotion of lifelong learning is an essential component of its mission, the MCW Continuing Medical Education (CME) program is committed to providing quality continuing medical and professional education to meet the needs of physicians, scientists, psychologists, and other health care providers on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus and in the community.
Purpose:
The mission of the CME Program at MCW, as administered by the Office of Continuing & Professional Education (OCPE), is to enhance the development of practicing and teaching health care professionals by providing high quality educational activities that impart new knowledge and teach new skills. Integral to our purpose is to promote activities that will enhance both quality and safety in patient care.
Content Areas:
The OCPE strives to achieve its purpose by working with MCW departments, individual faculty members and affiliated/community organizations to develop programming in the areas of primary care, specialty and sub-specialty topics in medicine and surgery. All content is expected to be based on the best evidence currently available from basic medical science, clinical medicine, or public health fields and to be free of commercial interest and bias. In addition to diverse clinical topics, the OCPE emphasizes activities focusing on professional responsibilities related to patient safety and advocacy, new technologies, research, health care policy, ethics, compliance and efficient practice methods. Activities will emphasize desirable physician attributes as identified by governmental agencies and reports, accreditation organizations and professional societies, such as the ACGME and ABMS core competencies.
Target Audience:
The OCPE targets it efforts to meet the educational needs of MCW faculty and local community-based professionals as well as regional, national and international audiences. It also works with the professionals of affiliated hospitals and clinics to provide outreach activities in distant settings through technology. The OCPE, through the excellence and expertise of the faculty, partners with reputable non-accredited organizations to offer specialized continuing medical education activities through joint sponsorships.
Types of Activities:
The CME Program at MCW includes seminars, workshops, review courses, lecture series and conferences, grand rounds and mini-preceptorship programs, enduring materials, Internet CME, and performance improvement CME.
Expected Results of the Program:
The OCPE strives to be the leading resource for health care professional education and development in southeastern Wisconsin. The MCW CME Program is organized to assess changes in competence, knowledge and performance of the participants. It is expected that the Performance Improvement CME programs will improve the health of the patients served by our target audience. Evaluations of activities will be used to develop and enhance future activities.
