Robyn Shapiro, the Center's director and co-founder, oversees the Center's multifaceted activities of education, consultation, research, and community outreach and directs the Medical Ethics Committee Network, an umbrella organization of hospital and long-term care institution members from throughout the world. Professor Shapiro serves as an appointed member of the National Institutes of Health’s Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee. This Committee provides advice and recommendations to the Director of the NIH on the conduct and oversight of research involving recombinant DNA and on other NIH activities pertinent to recombinant DNA technology. Recently, Professor Shapiro was appointed to the Biosafety Working Group of this NIH Committee, and also to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists’ Commission on Goals. In May 2007, Professor Shapiro completed her service on the Food and Drug Administration’s Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee, and she also completed her service on the American Bar Association’s Coordinating Group on Bioethics and the Law. In August 2007, Professor Shapiro was installed as Chair of the American Bar Association’s Individual Rights and Responsibilities Section, and this past year she was inducted as an American Bar Association Fellow. Professor Shapiro continues her service on the Ethics Committee of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the Community Advisory Board of ABCD (“After Breast Cancer Diagnosis”), and the Scientific Advisory Committee of the Alzheimer's Association of Southeastern Wisconsin. Professor Shapiro also continues her appointment as ABA Advisor to the National Commission for Uniform State Laws’ Drafting Committee on the Misuse of Genetic Information in Employment and Insurance. Also, Professor Shapiro serves on a number of institutional ethics committees and research review boards, she serves on the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Oncology Data and Safety Monitoring Board, and she was recently appointed to the board of the Alliance for Science, Ethics and Technology. In addition, Professor Shapiro serves as a reviewer for the Journal of the American Medical Association, and on the editorial board of the Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics.  In addition to her positions at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Professor Shapiro is a Partner in the Health Law Practice Group of Drinker Biddle & Reath, LLP in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
