Arthur Derse, MD, JD

Professor of Bioethics and Emergency Medicine
Associate Director and Director of Medical and Legal Affairs, Center for the Study of Bioethics

Dr. Derse is Associate Director and Director of Medical and Legal Affairs of the Center for the Study of Bioethics, and is Clinical Professor of Bioethics and Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin. His educational activities include direction of the medical school's medical ethics course and several graduate school courses encompassing law, ethics education, ethics consultation and direction of the medical school's humanities course. Dr. Derse is a past president of the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities (ASBH), the 1600-member academic organization of bioethicists and humanities scholars. He is a Senior Consultant for Academic Affairs at the American Medical Association's Institute for Ethics. He contributed to the development of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded Education for Physicians on End of life Care (EPEC) Project and serves as a member of its national faculty. Dr. Derse serves as ethics committee chair at Froedtert Hospital (the Medical College of Wisconsin's adult university hospital) and ethics consultant at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. His publication and research has focused on emergency medicine and ethics, confidentiality, informed consent, end-of-life decision making, the doctor-patient relationship and the use of the internet in academic bioethics and medicine. He is co-author of the Code of Ethics of the American College of Emergency Physicians and Practical Ethics for Nurses and Nursing Students. He serves on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Bioethics (AJOB), the Journal of Clinical Ethics, the Medical Ethics Advisor, the Virtual Mentor, and the forthcoming Cambridge Dictionary of Bioethics. He is the founder and moderator of the MCW Bioethics Discussion Forum, a nationally recognized academic Internet discussion group. He is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin Medical School and the University of Wisconsin Law School, cum laude; and he completed a fellowship in medical education at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
