The objective of the BRFSS is to use uniform procedures to collect state-specific data on preventive health practices and risk behaviors associated with chronic diseases, injuries, and preventive infectious diseases. Factors assessed include seat belt use, tobacco use, physical activity, diet, and use of cancer screening services. Data are collected from a random sample of adults through monthly telephone surveys. [Refer to Datum Vol.VI No.2 and the BRFSS website

Description:
Reinterviewed women who were respondents to the 1988 NMIHS to provide information on a number of areas related to child health and development. The LF consists of three parts: the live birth survey, the child medical provider survey, and the fetal and infant death survey. The birth survey is a nationally representative study that examined the children of women initially interviewed for the live birth cohort of the 1988 NMIHS. Its primary purpose was to obtain data on national health issues affecting children, such as child development, effects of low birth weight, child injury, child care, pediatric care, health insurance coverage, child safety, and acute and chronic illness. For the child medical provider survey, each woman was asked to provide the names of all medical providers and hospitals where her child was diagnosed, treated, and/or admitted. Each health provider was asked to supply information on its organization, the child's health status and history, and information on each visit or hospitalization. The fetal and infant death survey was composed of a subsample of women from the fetal death and infant death cohorts in the 1988 NMIHS. Its purpose was to gather information about the health of the respondents and any pregnancies experienced since their loss in 1988. The 1991 LF can be merged with the 1988 NMIHS to provide a rich longitudinal database for maternal and child health. [Refer to Datum Vol.VI No.3 and the Followup to the NMIHS website

Description:
Contains supplementary information for the 1986 through 1994 NHIS. Linkage information was collected of NHIS respondents 18 years old and older to allow for matching to the National Death Index (NDI). Linkage of the NHIS respondents with the NDI provides a longitudinal component to the NHIS that allows for ascertainment of vital status. The addition of vital status permits the use of NHIS data for survival analyses, mortality rates, and life expectancy while using the richness of the NHIS questionnaires as covariates. Information contained in this database includes cause-of-death codes, NCHS cause recodes, and entity-axis and record-axis multiple causes-of-death codes. [Refer to Datum Vol.V No.2
