Research Area: Understanding biological processes underlying cone vision and vision disorders
Upon completion of my first year of graduate school in the Interdisciplinary Program, I joined the Carroll Lab. The Carroll lab uses novel optical imaging techniques to study the development and health of the human retina. One specific feature of my research is the fovea and its development. The fovea is a unique structure characterized by an avascular zone and remodeled inner retinal layers in a manner to reduce optical scattering and maximally expose cone photoreceptors to the incoming photons needed for vision. My research is focused on characterizing the fovea in normal and diseased individuals to determine what are normative features of the fovea in normal adult humans, how they change with development and how this development is disrupted in specific diseases of known genetic origin.
