Annual MSTP Fall Retreat
The Medical Scientist Training Program Annual Retreat was held November 14-15, 2008 at the Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center, located on the shores of Lake Michigan in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. This retreat is a time for our students to come together with selected faculty and interact to address issues specific to the dual degree trainee and to interact in a relaxed environment.
On Friday, trainees andn faculty met for refrashments and then after a wonderful dinner participated in a lively panel discussion on "Couples that Work in Medicine and/or Science - How Do You Make It Work?"
P
anelists included: Carmen Bergom, MD PhD and Michael Bergom, MD; Melinda Dwinell, PhD and Michael Dwinell, PhD; and Michelle Lutz, MD PhD and Tom Lutz, PhD.
A Saturday morning lecture was presented by
G. Richard Olds, MD,Chairman and Professor of the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Medicine and Linda and John Mellowes Professor of Medicine. Dr. Old’s topic was “Post graduate training for MD/PhD’s including Assessing Physician Scientist Pathways.” Afterward, Dr. Olds took time to meet with students, alone and in small groups to discuss specific issues that were related to residency programs and dual degree training in general.
Our retreat culminated with a seminar by Jonathan I. Ravdin, MD, Dean of the Medical College of Wisconsin and Executive Vice President. Dr. Ravdin spoke on “Human Mucosal Immunity to Entaomoeba Histolytica and Development of an Amebiasis Subunit Vaccine.” After the seminar, trainees and Dr. Ravdin met for a dessert mixer to allow for continued discussion of Dean Ravdin's research and philosophy on dual degree training.
The retreat provides trainees with an opportunity to strengthen friendships while dealing with topics that are pertinent to their career planning. A great time was had by all. We can't wait to do it again next year!
