President's Message

National League

From some of the most hallowed halls in the United States, Medical College alumni who work at the National Institutes of Health are opening new doors to medical discovery and honing clinical expertise. Many lead or support innovative research programs, while others are involved in training or in the grant process. They are making their marks with unique approaches in areas that include cancer, mental health, genetics, orthopaedics, imaging, ophthalmology and cardiovascular disease.

Hope from Hiroshima

As a child living in post-war Hiroshima, Dr. Ritsuko Komaki lost a close friend to cancer caused by radiation from the atomic bomb. Today, she uses radiation to help treat cancer patients, her childhood experience inspiring her work as a radiation oncologist, the memory never far from her mind. She was also named the Medical College's 2006 Alumna of the Year.

Psychiatrist plans gift to College

A forensic psychiatrist, alumna Dr. Marlene Mirassou has dedicated her career to providing mental health services to inmates incarcerated in California. Also a faculty member at UC Davis for nearly 25 years, now semi-retired, she has included the Medical College in her estate plans.

Otolaryngologist Dr. Ronald J. Darling has been elected to a one-year term as Alumni Association President. Other Association officers and directors were elected this spring.

The 2006 Alumni Weekend included an awards banquet and special dinners and activities for reunion classes. Photos of 1946, 1951, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996 classmates are featured.

The 50-year reunion for the Class of 1956 included special events and honors throughout the Medical College of Wisconsin's 2006 commencement weekend. A number of alumni faculty members also received honors during commencement activities.
