Welcome Everyone!!

This will be where you will find all the information about your upcoming Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Dept of Anesthesiology

Below you will find questions with the answers most of you have been asking.
I will post more as they come in.

When is orientation for Institution and Department?

Institution Orientation through the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals (MCWAH) for 3 days starting Thursday, June 26th, 7:30am-4:30pm, Friday, June 27th, 8:30am-4:00pm, and Monday, June 30th, 8:15am-5:00pm.  All new residents are required to attend these orientation dates.  June 26th will be a hospital specific day, half of the residents will be at Froedtert Hospital for the morning and half at VA Medical Center in the morning and will switch at noon to the other location.  You will be notified on where you will begin your orientation day.  Click here for an agenda for the MCWAH Orientation with specifics on what will be covered each day.

The Anesthesia Department will announce when our date will be.

Keep looking at this Q & A on this website for update info.

Is ACLS required prior to your start date?

Yes, MCWAH requires you to be ACLS certified prior to your start date.  If you are unable to be certified at your current training program please use the following link to order a CD for Part 1 of the certification and then when you arrive here you can complete Part 2 (skills test) at Froedtert.

Certification or re-certification (in hospital version) is done on-line in the computer lab or your home computer and takes very little time to complete.  Follow the instructions below.

It is not always easy or healthcare providers to keep their certifications current.  No matter where you are, no matter when, if you have a PC and the new Heart code CD, plus a simple skill check, you can get certified on the spot.  Heart Code(tm) ACLS Anywere the official AHA self directed ACLS learning program.  Click here

Need to apply for an National Provider Identifier (NPI)?

NPI number is required after you have graduated from Medical School or any other healthcare training program.  Please print off the following instructions to complete your application for your number.  After you have received your number, please forward the email you receive with your NPI number listed.  Instructions

Who will be taking the In-Training Exam?

PGY1's and CA-1's will be taking the in-training exam.  This exam will be on SATURDAY, JULY 12, 2008.  This is a requirement of the department.  Please make sure you notify your intern year coordinator you will need to be call free the night before and night of the exam.  This exam does take all day.  More info to follow.

What is the AKT exam and who is required to take the exam?

The Anesthesia Knowledge Test also referred to as AKT will be taken by all the incoming CA-1's to our program.  New PGY-1's are NOT required to take until their CA-1 training year.

There are 3 seperate exams taken throughout your CA-1 and CA-2 training years. (Pre-Test, AKT1, and AKT6)  The pre-test is administered in the first days of residency and the AKT-1 as a post test at the end of your first 6 weeks.  These exams have been designed specifically for beginning residents and assess their baseline anesthesia knowledge and growth of knowlege in the first month.   Your pre-test is scheduled on Tuesday, July 1st at 8:00am.  A schedule will be included in your Portfolio/Orientation Binder at the Anesthesia Orientation.

What books will be given to the CA1 class?

Adult Perioperative Anesthesia: Requisites in Anesthesiology
by Cole, Daniel J. MD

This book covers the many diverse aspects of adult perioperative anesthesia. It explains all of the basic principles, clinical concepts, and management options involved in providing anesthesia for adult patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures. And, it discusses recent advances and changing trends in anesthetic care. A user-friendly format, with many at-a-glance tables and boxes, makes clinical information easy to access.

Clinical Anesthesia
by Barash, Paul G. MD

The widely acclaimed text Clinical Anesthesia is now in its Fifth Edition, with thoroughly updated coverage and a new, more user-friendly design. More than 100 leading experts cover every aspect of contemporary perioperative medicine in one comprehensive, clinically focused, clear, concise, and accessible volume. New chapters in this edition cover genomic basis of perioperative medicine, office-based anesthesia, and disaster preparedness and bioterrorism. Each chapter opens with a numbered list of key points and the numbers are used in the margins to help readers locate information on those points.
