Timothy Nelson, MD, PhD

Tim received his PhD in 2003 and his MD in 2005.

Tim finished Internal Medicine Residency and completed board certification while at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is currently the Chief Medical Resident in the Clinician Investigator Training Program in combination with the Cardiology Fellowship at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.

He gave a seminar entitled “Converting Ordinary Fibroblasts into Stem Cells for Cardiac Repair.”  Tim indicated this work has evolved over the past two years during research rotations during residency as well as dedicated research time as part of the CI-training program. The scientific breakthroughs in the year 2008 have opened a new era of biomedical research with induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. The research presented by Tim demonstrated proof-of-principle studies that iPS cells are sufficiently equipped to differentiate into cardiac tissues and contribute to functionally significant repair of ischemic heart disease models. The work is leading to new avenues for stem cell research and offers a new strategy for regenerative medicine from basic discovery, to emerging diagnostics, to novel therapeutics.

In addition to his seminar, Tim was the featured guest at a dinner at the Melting Pot Restaurant. Tim stated “It was a wonderful opportunity to re-connect with colleagues and get to know the future faces of the MSTP here at MCW.”

Of his time here, Tim indicated “that the experiences obtained at MCW in the Department of Biochemistry and in collaboration with the Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology & Anatomy under the mentorship of Dr. Misra with Drs. Duncan and Lough was the launching pad to be able to actively participate at Mayo within the research post-doc/clinical fellowship programs. The clinical training at MCW was second to none and opened multiple opportunities while at Mayo Clinic. The dedication by the leadership at MCW to the program and the trainees has always been at the highest level.”  Tim indicated that he will always be indebted to training and mentorship he received at MCW within the MSTP program. “It is indeed an exciting time to be part of the success of MCW and be positioned to contribute to state-of-the-art biomedical research community originating from MCW that is spreading throughout the world.
