Patient Services
More than 1,100 Medical College of Wisconsin physicians provide adult patient care as the Medical College Physicians and pediatric patient care through Children’s Specialty Group, a joint venture with Children’s Hospital and Health System. The Medical College of Wisconsin physician practice includes doctors in every specialty and subspecialty of medicine.
Each year, Medical College of Wisconsin physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and psychologists care for more than 350,000 patients, representing nearly 1.4 million patient visits.
Medical College of Wisconsin physicians practice at three major affiliates - Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center - and many other hospitals and clinics in the Milwaukee area.
Education
There are more than 1,200 students enrolled in educational programs at the Medical College. This includes 820 medical students, and more than 400 graduate students.
College faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 200 physicians in fellowship training through The Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.
The College provides continuing medical education to more than 15,000 health professional registrants each year.
Research
The Medical College of Wisconsin is a major national research center, in fact, the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin.
In FY 2007-08, faculty received approximately $147 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which approximately $134 million is for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In the federal government’s FY 2008, the College received $91.3 million in NIH funding. The Medical College ranks 43rd among the nation’s 130 medical schools for NIH research funding.
Annually, College faculty direct or collaborate on more than 3,000 research studies, and more than 1,300 scientific papers by College faculty are published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Studies are conducted in 27 academic departments.
Technology Transfer
In FY 2007-08, College faculty and students reported 40 new discoveries and inventions to the College’s Office of Technology Development. The College currently has 250 pending and issued patents in the U.S. and foreign countries. To bring these new technologies and related products to market, the College has research and development affiliations with campus institutions, other major universities and research institutions, health care organizations, as well as government and venture capital groups in Wisconsin and elsewhere. The College has launched 18 start-up companies and licensed technologies to 50 pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and medical device corporations.
Public and Community Health
The Medical College of Wisconsin invests significantly in expanding its community mission to build strategic community-academic partnerships that have the greatest impact on Wisconsin’s most critical health needs. More than 150 faculty from over 20 departments and centers are working with greater than 200 diverse community groups to advance public and community health in the metro Milwaukee area and throughout Wisconsin.
History
The Medical College of Wisconsin is a private, national, freestanding institution. The College was founded in 1893 as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine.
In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school. The school then continued as a private, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to The Medical College of Wisconsin. The College has approximately 13,500 alumni.
