May 9 - Medical College of Wisconsin researchers in Milwaukee have shown for the first time that thrombopoietin (TPO), a naturally occurring protein being developed as a pharmaceutical to increase platelet count in cancer patients during chemotherapy, can also protect the heart against injury during a heart attack.
May 5 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a one-year, $358,150 grant from the National Eye Institute to study genes that control how immature retinal cells differentiate and become mature nervous system cells. This study may lead to a better understanding of how stem cells regulate differentiation and how the genes that control this process contribute to disease.
May 5 - The National Biomedical Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin has received a five-year, $5.66 million renewal grant from the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering. The EPR Center, in the department of biophysics, was established in 1976 and is classified as a “Biomedical Technology Resource Center (BTRC).” It is one of eight major federally-designated research centers at the College.
May 2 - The Wisconsin Breast Cancer Showhouse (WBCS) has chosen its 11th annual Showhouse, a 7,400 sq. ft. Mediterranean revival mansion at 3580 N. Lake Dr., built in 1923 by Waldemar R. Helmholz and his wife, Irene. The home will be open for public tours May 31-June 15, featuring the work of many of the area’s finest interior and landscape designers. Argosy Foundation, and Northwestern Mutual Foundation are the presenting sponsors.
May 2- Rashmi Sood, Ph.D., has been appointed assistant professor of pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She joins the division of pediatric pathology and the Children’s Research Institute. Her primary research interest is the study of the vascular bed of the placenta and the mechanism of pregnancy-related cardiovascular disorders.
January 2 - In its continuing commitment to support life-saving heart research, the 12th annual Steve Cullen Healthy Heart Run & Walk, will take place on Sat., Feb. 9, at Wil-O-Way Underwood Clubhouse, 10602 Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa. All proceeds directly benefit heart disease research at the Medical College of Wisconsin Cardiovascular Center.
January 2 - Medical College of Wisconsin researchers are seeking individuals with Type II Diabetes, ages 35 to 70 years, for a study evaluating a novel cause for diabetic complications. The study at Froedtert Hospital involves a single, two to three hour visit to the research center for assessment of blood vessel function.
January 17 - Researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin are studying the effects of diet and exercise on the heart and blood vessels. The researchers are seeking volunteers who run more than 15 miles a week or lift weights at least 3 times a week.
January 17 - Mary Saunders, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Her clinical interests include pediatric emergency medicine, acute care and trauma.
January 17 - Thomas Kotsonis, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of VA Medical Center - Milwaukee. His clinical interests include inpatient rehabilitation, and injection therapy for spasticity and musculoskeletal medicine.
January 17 - Sunitha Sukumaran, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of Froedtert Hospital. Her clinical interests include the treatment of sickle cell disease.
January 17 - Research to study the effectiveness of a new biomedical device used during CPR for adult patients suffering cardiac arrest in Milwaukee County, recently underwent successful community consultation. The Medical College of Wisconsin is one of 10 centers in the country participating in the study.
January 18 - John Imig, Ph.D., has been appointed professor of pharmacology and toxicology at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
January 15 - Leena Varkey Maramattom, M.D., has been appointed assistant professor of medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of Froedtert Hospital. Her clinical interests include internal medicine and providing personalized care for patients from admission to discharge.
January 18 - The Medical College of Wisconsin has received a four-year, $533,656 grant from the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to analyze outcomes of children following pediatric emergency department care for minor injury.
