Division of Pediatric Surgery

MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Keith T. Oldham, MD
Chief, Pediatric Surgery

At Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, pediatric surgeons are part of a multidisciplinary team dedicated to the comprehensive care of children.  They work closely with family members, primary care physicians and specialty trained anesthesiologists in addition to a wide variety of other pediatric specialists. Because of their special training and extensive experience, our pediatric surgeons are uniquely qualified to care for infants, children, and adolescents with problems requiring surgery.

The patient care emphases of all pediatric surgeons at Children's Hospital include congenital anomalies and newborn surgery, hernia surgery, imperforate anus surgery, inflammatory bowel disease, laparoscopic surgery, NUSS procedure, pediatric gastro-intestinal surgery, pediatric general surgery, pediatric oncology, pediatric trauma and burns, prenatal consults/Fetal Concerns Program, neonatal surgery, proctectomy/endorectal pull through, surgical critical care, thoracic surgery (non-cardiac)/pectus excavatum, undescended testis, Hirschprung's Disease.

The Division consists of the following faculty:  Drs. Keith OldhamJohn Aiken, Marjorie ArcaCasey Calkins, Laura Cassidy, David Gourlay, Dave LalQing (Robert) Miao, Kirkwood Pritchard, Tara Sander, Thomas Sato, Yang Shi, and Andrea Winthrop.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery has evolved rapidly in recent years and presently includes faculty made up of surgeons and basic science researchers. Dr. John Aiken joined the Department of Surgery as part of Dr. Marvin Glicklich's community based group in the mid 1990's to establish the Division. Dr. Andrea Winthrop was recruited from Washington University and Dr. Thomas Sato from the National Children's Medical Center in 1997. I came from Duke to lead the Division in 1998. Marjorie Arca, MD joined us from CS Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, MI in 2003. In 2005 Casey Calkins, MD, was recruited from Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, Missouri. The division's basic scientists include Kirkwood Pritchard, PhD, Yang Shi, PhD, and Tara Sander, PhD.

The Division of Pediatric Surgery is in a position of strength. The fiscal and patient base is growing, the research effort has several exciting new opportunities, and the educational programs are attracting some of the finest candidates in the United States. The year 2001 marked the beginning of pediatric surgery fellowship training as well. During 2005 a surgical critical care fellowship was initiated.
