Welcome

The Protein and Nucleic Acid (PNA) Core Facility is managed through the Medical College of Wisconsin Department of Biochemistry in consultation with the PNA Steering Committee. Services of the PNA are open to all MCW faculty in addition to private/corporate investigators not associated with the medical college. The mission of the PNA is to provide timely state of the art services for protein and nucleic acid analysis to support the research efforts of MCW investigators. The core lab is managed by Dr. Bassam Wakim, PNA Facility Director. Technical staff include Michael Pereckas and Dr. Joyce Thompson.

The Protein and Nucleic Acid Facility (PNA) provides a number of routine services including DNA sequencing, peptide synthesis and proteins/peptide sequencing by Edman degradations.  In addition to the routine services, the PNA houses two state-of-the-art mass spectrometers; an LTQ nanospray LC/MS from Thermo-Fisher and a Voyager DE-Pro matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI-TOF) from Applied Biosystems. The LTQ nanospray LC/MS offers the high capacity of a linear ion trap and very high levels of accuracy and sensitivity.  This instrument is capable of identifying proteins in the fmol range.    Partially purified protein mixtures even in low abundance are relatively easy to handle.  The LTQ is also suitable for the identification of protein posttranslational modification.  The Protein facility is managed and operated by highly qualified scientists with excellent knowledge of mass spectrometry and it’s application to the field of proteomics.

News:

The Protein and Nucleic Acid Facility (PNA) offers a full week workshop covering mass spectrometry and its applications to proteomics.  This workshop is offered bi-yearly.  For more information please contact Dr. B. Wakim at bwakim@mcw.edu or by phone at (414) 456-8891.
