The Department of Emergency Medicine's efforts in simulation are constantly growing and evolving. We are currently using simulation to train medical providers at many levels, including medical students, residents, faculty physicians and pre-hospital providers. The department is also involved in educational research using simulator technology. The Department owns several simulators including a Laerdal SimMan, a high-fidelity human patient simulator, the UltraSim ultrasonography simulator and several task trainers for such skills as central line placement and intubation. We also have access to the Medical College of Wisconsin's STAR Center, which houses additional simulation resources and high-tech conference rooms that enrich the learning environment.
All Department of EM faculty participate in a skills maintenance program based around simulation. The Department recognizes the need for physicians to stay up to date in crucial areas of patient care, particularly the areas of critical care and airway management. Department faculty also have the opportunity to become ultrasound credentialed by the hospital utilizing the UltraSim ultrasound simulator.
Flight for Life, our helicopter based transport team, trains twice monthly utilizing a variety of simulators. Flight for Life crews, including paramedics, nurses and MCW Emergency Medicine Residents practice numerous skills including critical care evaluation and treatment, airway management and access procedures. Flight crews learn these vital skills using dedicated task trainers and two high-fidelity human patient simulators.
