The Section of Out-of-Hospital and Disaster Medicine is dedicated to imparting emergency medicine residents and medical students with a working knowledge of the principles of out-of-hospital and mass casualty care. This unparalleled experience is made possible through collaboration with on-campus and off-campus partners that help to support one of the best EMS systems in the country.
Residents and students gain EMS education through a process that is integrated into the emergency medicine curriculum. Section faculty work clinically as attending physicians in the Emergency Departments of Froedert Hospital and Children's Hospital of Wisconsin. Lectures on various EMS and disaster medicine topics are given by faculty regularly throughout the year during the Department of Emergency Medicine's Grand Rounds. In addition, all emergency medicine residents are trained and authorized to provide on-line medical control for the Milwaukee County EMS system. As on-line medical control physicians, residents help paramedics in the county provide care to citizens on a daily basis.
The Section also provides ample opportunities to observe and participate with medical care in the field. Residents and students complete ride-along shifts with Milwaukee County EMS paramedic units, and have the option to fly on Flight for Life transports. Third-year residents complete an EMS rotation that provides an overview of field care and medical direction through direct participation in ambulance ride-alongs, quality assurance projects, and administrative meetings. Included in this rotation is a didactic series of lectures and readings. Completion of the rotation provides emergency physicians an understanding of emergency medical services and its relationship with in-hospital emergency care. Residents also have the opportunity to serve as physicians at various mass gatherings and special events, and to observe field operations of various first responder agencies.
