The Children's Hospital of Wisconsin Child Development Center now accepts direct referrals to its School Performance Program. The program continues to provide comprehensive evaluations and diagnosis for a variety of problems that can affect a child's school performance. Now, however, physicians may refer diagnosed patients directly for treatment.

Some diagnoses that may be appropriate for referral to the School Performance Program include:

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Learning disabilities
  • Emotional problems
  • Interpersonal and social problems
  • Medical problems
  • Psychological conditions

Treatments for which direct referral is accepted include:

  • Group training for parents of children with ADHD and/or oppositional defiant disorder
  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Medication management
  • Socialization group for children with ADHD.

A team of specialists also helps families work effectively with school systems to ensure each child's educational needs are being met. The team includes pediatricians, psychologists and nurse practitioners with extensive experience working with school-related difficulties and school personnel. The team also includes a credentialed educator who is available to help families with curriculum modifications, tutoring and direct educational needs.

Neonatal Developmental Follow-Up Program Description
The Neonatal Developmental Follow-Up Program specializes in the assessment of growth and skill development of infants and young children. Children are identified for enrollment at the time of discharge from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit utilizing criteria developed by the Wisconsin Association for Perinatal Care. The team consists of a physician, registered nurse, physical therapist, occupational therapist and speech therapist. The patients are seen approximately every 6 months starting at 6 months adjusted age (calculated from due date). Each assessment includes an interval health and social history, review of developmental milestones, and a complete physical and neurodevelopmental examination. Attention is given to growth, nutrition, vision and hearing. Standardized testing and scoring of both psychomotor and cognitive skills as well as receptive and expressive language skills completes the visit.
