    Anesthesiology researcher joins College faculty

    Aug. 14, 2008 College News - Matthias Riess, MD, PhD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology and Physiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staff of the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center. His research interests include mechanisms that protect the heart, specifically focusing on the role of mitochondria, the principal sites for the generation of energy, as a trigger for heart protection while under anesthesia.

    Dr. Riess has been with the Medical College since 2000, when he began a postdoctoral research fellowship in Anesthesiology, followed by an Anesthesiology residency. Earlier, he completed an anesthesiology residency at the University of Münster, Germany.

    He is a reviewer for several journals including Anesthesiology and Cardiovascular Research, and has authored or co-authored more than 40 journal articles and 69 scientific abstracts.

    Dr. Riess received his PhD from the Medical College in 2004 and his medical degree from Albert-Ludwigs University in Freiburg, Germany in 1997.
