College’s NIH funding rank among medical schools improves four places

April 16, 2008 College News - The Medical College of Wisconsin was ranked 42nd among the nation’s 125 medical schools receiving National Institutes of Health (NIH) research and training support in FY 06-07. This ties the highest ranking the College ever achieved (it also ranked 42nd in FY 02-03), and represents a four-place improvement in rank from FY 05-06.

The improved ranking moved MCW ahead of the medical schools at the University of Cincinnati, the University of Illinois, the University of Utah and the University of California-Davis. No schools passed the College, and less than $1 million separates it from Boston University School of Medicine, the 41st-ranked medical school.

The rankings only compare NIH funding designated to “Schools of Medicine.” Many universities also receive significant NIH funding for “Organized Research Units,” “Overall Medical,” or “Schools of Dentistry, Nursing, Engineering or Public Health.” These dollars are not included. As such, two awards to the Medical College of Wisconsin totaling $342,800 for “Overall Medical” are not included.

Total NIH funding to MCW in FY 07 was $92,309,025, a nine-percent increase over FY 06, and the total NIH funding attributed to the medical school and used for the ranking was $91,966,225. The total number of NIH grants awarded to MCW increased from 192 in FY 06 to 206 in FY 07.
