Carlyle Chan, MD, Professor of
Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine, is serving as a panelist for a preview showing and discussion of a new one-hour Milwaukee Public Television (MPTV) documentary that explores how depression can effect a man's relationships and career. The documentary,
Depression in Men Explored, will be previewed in the MPTV Community Cinema series at Discovery World, 500 N. Harbor Drive, Wednesday, on May 14, at 7 p.m.
The preview, like the other shows in the MPTV monthly series, is free and open to the public. The evening will include a discussion of issues raised by the presentation, and reservations are not required.
The documentary explores the corrosive effect of depression on individuals, their relationships and careers through the intimate profiles of a diverse group of men. They include a former NFL quarterback, a Fortune 500 CEO, an unemployed Iraq War veteran, a university professor, a pastor and others.
Men Get Depression features revealing, normally confidential, scenes of psychotherapists discussing their patients' responses to treatment. Leading mental health professionals also comment on the emerging scientific understanding of depression, its physiologic causes, environmental triggers and new directions in treatment.
Shel Gross, director of public policy at the Mental Health America of Wisconsin, will lead the discussion following the presentation. Other panel members include Bernie Nowicki, Mental Health America board member and Jim Hill, head of Milwaukee County's new housing department.
The program is being presented by KCET-TV in May, which is Mental Health Awareness Month.
Men Get Depression premieres on MPTV-10 on Tuesday, May 20, at 8 p.m.
