April 9, 2008 College News -
Lawrence R. Goodman, MD, Professor of
Radiology and Chief of Thoracic Imaging, received the Society of Thoracic Radiology’s (STR) 2008 Gold Medal award for lifetime achievement, the society’s highest honor. This is just the second Gold Medal the society has awarded, and it was presented to Dr. Goodman during the society’s annual meeting March 5 in Ft. Myers, Fla.
Candidates for the STR Gold medal are chosen for their distinguished and extraordinary contributions to the field of chest radiology, their service to the society, and their contributions to the field of radiology in general. This includes professional contributions in teaching, research, and clinical investigation.
“Dr. Goodman was one of the pioneers in the field of chest radiology, and has willingly shared his expertise and knowledge with others around the world,” said
James Youker, MD, Chairman and Professor of Radiology. “He is very deserving of this honor from the Society of Thoracic Radiology.”
Dr. Goodman joined the College in 1983 and succeeded Dr. Gerry Scanlon as head of Chest Radiology. Later, he helped to establish a fellowship program in honor of Dr. Scanlon. Prior to coming to MCW, he served on the faculty at George Washington University and Hahnemann Medical College.
His main areas of research have focused around intensive care imaging, imaging of adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and imaging of pulmonary thromboembolic disease. He has published nearly 150 papers, and one of them, Detection of pulmonary embolism in patients with unresolved clinical and scintigraphic diagnosis: Helical CT vs angiography, was the 18th most-cited article in the American Journal of Radiology over the last century.
He also co-authored Intensive Care Radiology: Imaging of the Critically Ill (three editions) with the late Dr. Charles Putman, is the author of Felson’s Principles of Chest Roentgenology (three editions) published in seven languages, and has written 20 book chapters.
During his career, he has trained many fellows from North America as well as from countries such as Italy, Ireland, Turkey, Australia, Columbia and India.
The Society of Thoracic Radiology was founded in 1982 to develop an inclusive organization of radiologists interested in and dedicated to cardiopulmonary radiology. Dr. Goodman was one of the original members of the Society, and was instrumental in its conception. He served as the third president of the society and now, 25 years later, continues to serve the society as chairman of the historical committee. Last year, he was the head of the society’s 25th anniversary festivities.
Dr. Goodman received his MD from the State University of New York in Brooklyn in 1968, and completed his residency in radiology at Boston City Hospital/Boston University in 1972. After that, he did a one-year fellowship in pulmonary radiology at the University of California-San Francisco.
