Vascular Biologist joins Medical College of Wisconsin

May 8, 2008 College News - Rashmi Sood, PhD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Pathology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. She joins the division of Pediatric Pathology and the Children’s Research Institute. Her primary research interest is the study of the vascular bed of the placenta and the mechanism of pregnancy-related cardiovascular disorders.

Approximately five percent of pregnancies are complicated by maternal pre-eclampsia, a condition where high blood pressure arises in pregnancy with significant levels of protein in urine, and fetal growth restriction. Dr. Sood’s research has implications in the development of therapeutic approaches to these disorders.

“These pregnancy complications not only affect women’s health, but are also detrimental to the long term health of babies born from affected pregnancies,” said Dr. Sood.

She comes to the Medical College from the BloodCenter of Wisconsin, where she was a research scientist. She has authored or co-authored a number of articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Sood received her PhD in molecular biology from the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Bombay, India in 1993, and her Master of Science and Bachelor of Science from the University of Delhi, India, in 1985 and 1983, respectively.
