Ob/Gyn Residency Program

A Message from Dr. Lemen, Program Director:

Welcome to the Medical College of Wisconsin Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology.  We are extremely proud of our outstanding educational program.  The three main institutions in our program, Froedtert Hospital, Wheaton Franciscan Health Care St. Joseph and Columbia St. Mary's Hospital, offer a rich and diverse clinical educational experience.  It covers the entire depth and breadth of obstetrics and gynecology.

Our institutions combined have more than 9,000 deliveries per year, with a busy high-risk service at all three institutions.  Because we emphasize education over service, not every one of these deliveries needs to be attended by a resident. However, this large volume allows exposure to large numbers of complicated, high-risk patients and diverse procedural experience. Compared to all other ob/gyn residencies nationwide, our residents graduate with experience above the 70th percentile for vaginal and cesarean deliveries, operative vaginal deliveries (forceps) and multi-fetal pregnancies. We have level III neonatal intensive care units at all three institutions.

In regards to gynecology, I believe we offer an unmatched educational program. Our benign gynecology surgical experience is excellent. For example, our numbers of hysterectomies performed (both abdominal and vaginal) are near the 75% nationally. Our subspecialty experience is also broad. We have busy gynecologic oncology services and our residents graduate with experience greater than the 75% for surgeries for invasive cancer. Our reproductive endocrinology and infertility curriculum is first rate with appropriate emphasis on both the infertility aspects of the specialty as well as excellent experience in advanced laparoscopy training. The urogynecologic surgical experience has always been solid but is improved even further with an addition of a formal urogyn rotation into the curriculum.

Our residency program is about much more than procedural experience, however...The diverse teaching experience and learning environment at the three institutions facilitate you learning not just the "how's" but the "why's." We have a formal didactic curriculum with 4 hours of completely protected educational time each week.

In summary, we offer, what I believe, is one of the finest training programs in the country.  The hallmarks of the program are:

  • Diverse clinical experience with an outstanding blend of academic and community hospital training.  Our community hospitals are true teaching hospitals, with decades-long traditions of resident education. Both Columbia-St. Mary's and Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare St. Joseph formerly had their own free standing residency training programs and each site takes enormous pride in their educational role in the residency.
  • Unmatched clinical experience emphasizing the depth and breadth of the specialty.
  • Commitment to strong didactic teaching program that emphasizes evidence based teaching and clinical experience. Conference time is completely protected from clinical service.
  • A diverse faculty at all three sites committed to education.

You will finish the MCW residency well-trained and well-prepared.  Our residents have gone onto private practice, academic and fellowship positions. Please browse the remainder of our website for further details of the residency, our educational program, current residents, and the beautiful city of Milwaukee!
