Residency Rotations

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin has increased its number of residents per year to five as of ACGME approval in 2002. The clinical experience in the training program has also recently been enhanced by splitting up the trauma/oncology rotation into two separate, free-standing rotations to allow for more one-on-one teaching opportunities and a more focused and complete experience.

Throughout the five-year program, the resident rotates in a variety of clinical settings. These rotations provide extensive involvement in all the diagnostic, therapeutic, and surgical treatments encompassed by an orthopaedic practice. Rotations include the orthopaedic trauma service at a level-I trauma center, a busy pediatric orthopaedic service, specialty services, and five community hospitals.

The 2006-2007 academic year rotations are in graphic form in the link above and are listed below.

Year 1	First-year residents will have one-month rotations on orthopaedic trauma, vascular surgery, emergency room, plastic surgery, radiology, pediatric surgery, pediatric orthopaedics, anesthesia, orthopaedic research, and surgical intensive care unit, as well as two months on the general surgical trauma team.

Year 2	The PGY-II residents will spend 10 weeks each on the orthopaedic trauma service, the pediatric orthopaedic service, the hand and upper extremity service, the sports medicine service and the joint service.

Year 3	The PGY-III residents will spend 5 months at the VA Hospital, 10 weeks on the oncology service, and 5 weeks each on the foot, spine, joint and sports medicine services.

Year 4	The PGY-IV residents will spend 10 weeks each on the orthopaedic trauma service, the pediatric orthopaedic service, the hand and upper extremity service, 10 weeks at a private hospital of your choice, and 5 weeks each on the spine service and the foot service.

Year 5	The PGY-V residents will spend 10 weeks each on the orthopaedic trauma service, on the pediatric orthopaedic service, at the VA Hospital, 10 weeks at a private institution in a sub-specialty of your choice, and 5 weeks each on the sports medicine service and joint service.
