Applications to the orthopaedic residency program are submitted through ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service). All completed applications are reviewed by the selection committee to determine which candidates will be invited to interview. Invitations to interview are e-mailed to the candidates for either of two Fridays in January. Candidates may choose whichever Friday they prefer on a first come, first serve basis. An interview date confirmation is then e-mailed to the candidate.
The residency interviewing day begins with registration and a continental breakfast. The Department Chairman, Dr. Jeffrey Schwab, and the Program Director, Dr. Gregory Schmeling, give a brief introduction and orientation to the program. Interviews follow throughout the day. Lunch is provided.
Each invited applicant undergoes three interviews with different teams comprised of two members of the department of Orthopaedics. The three interviews, each lasting 30 minutes, are scheduled consecutively to give every candidate an opportunity, either before or after the interviews, to meet with the current residents and to tour the facilities.
Once all candidates have been interviewed, the Faculty meet at a later date to discuss and rank the candidates. Rank lists are then sent to ERAS in preparation for match day.
