July 8, 2005 - Brian H. Kopell, MD, has been appointed Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staffs of Froedtert Hospital and the VA Medical Center-Milwaukee, major teaching hospital affiliates of the Medical College.
A Board-eligible neurosurgeon, Dr. Kopell specializes in reversible treatments of various functional neurological conditions such as movement, pain and psychiatric disorders. In addition to his teaching and patient care responsibilities, his special research interests include new applications of deep brain stimulation technology, and functional brain imaging.
His clinical research has produced several patents, including a method of treating psychiatric disorders by electrical stimulation within the cerebral cortex, and a method of treating psychiatric diseases by neuromodulation within the thalamus structure of the brain. He also co-engineered, designed and invented a patent-pending software and hardware package allowing data retrieval and programming of implantable biomedical devices via the Internet. Dr. Kopell completed a fellowship in functional neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic, and trained in the field as a visiting fellow at the University Hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. He also served as chief resident while completing his neurosurgery residency at New York University Medical Center in New York City.
He received his medical degree, with honors in neuroscience, from New York University School of Medicine, were he won election to Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society. He received his bachelor of arts degree, cum laude, with distinction in English Literature, from the University of Pennsylvania College of Arts and Sciences in Philadelphia.
