History
The Medical College of Wisconsin is a private, national, freestanding institution. The College was founded in 1893 as the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1913 the Wisconsin College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Milwaukee Medical College merged to become the Marquette University School of Medicine. In 1967 Marquette University, due to financial constraints, terminated its sponsorship of the medical school.
The school then continued as a private, freestanding institution. Its name was changed in 1970 to The Medical College of Wisconsin. The College has approximately 13,500 alumni.

Degrees offered
The Medical College offers the MD, PhD, MS, MPH and MA degrees. PhD degrees are awarded in biochemistry; biophysics; biostatistics; cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy; microbiology and molecular genetics; pharmacology and toxicology; public and community health; physiology and functional imaging (joint PhD program with Marquette University).
Master’s degrees are offered in: bioethics (MA), epidemiology (MS), and public health (MPH). Joint degree programs are offered in: bioinformatics (MS) and healthcare technologies management (MS) with Marquette University, and medical informatics (MS) with the Milwaukee School of Engineering. In addition, Graduate Certificate programs are offered in Public Health and in Research Ethics.
Residency training is offered in almost all medical specialties and subspecialties.
In 2007, the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (HLC-NCA) granted reaccreditation to the Medical College for the longest term possible (10 years). In 2003, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) awarded full, eight-year accreditation to the Medical College, the maximum period of accreditation. The LCME is the accrediting body of all US medical schools.

Faculty / Staff
The Medical College has nearly 5,300 faculty and staff (approx. 4,800 full-time equivalents).
Faculty: More than 1,400 full-time and part-time Staff: More than 3,400 full-time / 200 part-time / 240 project and limited-term. Approximately 5,100 faculty and staff work on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center campus and nearly 200 work at 13 other health care facilities in eastern Wisconsin. Approximately 1,000 physicians from the community serve as volunteer faculty. The College is the 10th largest private employer in metro Milwaukee.
Education
There are more than 1,200 students enrolled in educational programs at the Medical College. This includes 820 medical students, and more than 400 graduate students.
College faculty supervise approximately 650 physicians in residency training and 200 physicians in fellowship training through The Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. Approximately 200 scientists are engaged in postdoctoral research fellowship training through the Office of Postdoctoral Education.
The College provides continuing medical education to more than 15,000 health professional registrants each year.

Research
The Medical College of Wisconsin is a major national research center, in fact, the largest research institution in the Milwaukee metro area and 2nd largest in Wisconsin.
In FY 2007-08, faculty received approximately $147 million in external support for research, teaching, training and related purposes, of which approximately $134 million is for research. This total includes highly competitive research and training awards from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
In the federal government’s FY 2008, the College received $91.3 million in NIH funding. The Medical College ranks 43rd among the nation’s 130 medical schools for NIH research funding.
Annually, College faculty direct or collaborate on more than 3,000 research studies, and more than 1,300 scientific papers by College faculty are published in peer-reviewed medical journals. Studies are conducted in 27 academic departments and the following centers:

Technology Transfer
In FY 2007-08, College faculty and students reported 40 new discoveries and inventions to the College’s Office of Technology Development. The College currently has 250 pending and issued patents in the U.S. and foreign countries. To bring these new technologies and related products to market, the College has research and development affiliations with campus institutions, other major universities and research institutions, health care organizations, as well as government and venture capital groups in Wisconsin and elsewhere. The College has launched 18 start-up companies and licensed technologies to 50 pharmaceutical, diagnostic, biotechnology and medical device corporations.
Patient Services
More than 1,100 Medical College of Wisconsin physicians provide adult patient care as the Medical College Physicians and pediatric patient care through Children’s Specialty Group, a joint venture with Children’s Hospital and Health System. The Medical College of Wisconsin physician practice includes doctors in every specialty and subspecialty of medicine.
Each year, Medical College of Wisconsin physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and psychologists care for more than 350,000 patients, representing nearly 1.4 million patient visits.
Medical College of Wisconsin physicians practice at three major affiliates - Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Zablocki VA Medical Center - and many other hospitals and clinics in the Milwaukee area.

Froedtert Hospital is the primary adult hospital affiliate of the Medical College and is staffed by College physicians providing care in all medical specialties and subspecialties. Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin are at the forefront of new technology and care in many areas, including cancer, heart and vascular diseases, brain injury and disorders, spinal cord injury, transplant, communication disorders, digestive diseases, diabetes, orthopedics, urology and women’s health. Froedtert has the only adult Level 1 Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin. Children's Hospital of Wisconsin, is the principal pediatric hospital affiliate of the Medical College. In 2009, Parents magazine rated Children’s Hospital third in the nation in its Best Children’s Hospital survey, and five Children’s specialty areas earned top 10 ratings: Emergency Medicine - No. 2, Neonatal Care – No. 5, Pulmonary Care – No.7, Cardiac Care – No. 9, Cancer care – No. 10. Medical College physicians are on staff at the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, a major hospital affiliate of the College since 1946. The VA Medical Center provides 168 acute care hospital beds. Annually, it admits 6,400 patients and records more than 575,000 outpatient visits. It is one of the busiest and most comprehensive centers operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Approximately $17.4 million in research (funded primarily by the VA and the NIH) is conducted by College faculty at the Zablocki VA Medical Center. See information at www.milwaukee.va.gov/.

Public and Community Health
The Medical College of Wisconsin invests significantly in expanding its community mission to build strategic community-academic partnerships that have the greatest impact on Wisconsin’s most critical health needs. More than 150 faculty from over 20 departments and centers are working with greater than 200 diverse community groups to advance public and community health in the metro Milwaukee area and throughout Wisconsin.

The College’s public and community health mission is complemented by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin (AHW) endowment, dedicated to improving the health of the people of Wisconsin through three components:
- Healthier Wisconsin Partnership Program supports community-academic partnerships that address public and community health improvement.
- Research for a Healthier Tomorrow supports research initiatives in such fields as cardiovascular disease, cancer, neuroscience, genetics and population health.
- Educational Leadership for the Health of the Public supports programs that provide training for health care professionals, medical and graduate students, patients and consumers.

Libraries
Medical College Libraries comprise three facilities: the main research library located in the Health Research Center; and two clinical libraries, one in Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and one in Froedtert Hospital. The libraries hold among the largest health sciences collections in the Midwest, with more than 250,000 volumes and 3,000 online journals, 800 electronic books and 85 databases. The Library has an active education program training users in accessing online information. The Library is a leader in providing evidence-based-medicine resources and instruction for the Medical College community. The library is open to the public and serves a number of health consumers, including patients and their families.
