Otolaryngologist Dr. Jonathan Bock Joins Medical College Faculty

Ear, nose, and throat specialist Jonathan M. Bock, MD, has been appointed assistant professor of otolaryngology and communication sciences at The Medical College of Wisconsin and to the medical staffs of Froedtert Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Medical Center, major teaching affiliates of the College.

Board certified in otolaryngology, his clinical emphasis is laryngology, professional voice care, and head and neck surgery and oncology.

Prior to this appointment, Dr. Bock completed a fellowship in Laryngology and Care of the Professional Voice at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN and a fellowship in molecular oncology at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, IA. He also served a general surgery internship and a residency in otolaryngology in the Department of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Iowa.

Dr. Bock’s research interests involve head and neck molecular oncology and molecular laryngology. His cancer research studies have evaluated the effects of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, sulindac, and celecoxib on head and neck cancer growth both alone and in combination with radiation therapy and chemotherapeutics. Additionally, he is interested in the molecular changes in laryngeal muscle that occur after vocal cord paralysis and laryngeal wound healing.

Dr. Bock became interested in voice pathology during his residency as it was an issue close to his own interests. He is a classically-trained pianist, self-taught guitarist, and singer, and continues to perform music recreationally. He has performed with numerous choirs, bands, and solo projects over the years, including a performance at Carnegie Hall with his college acapella group, the Yale Whiffenpoofs.

Dr. Bock received his medical degree at the Medical College, where he won a number of clinical honors and scholarships, including the Thomas W. Grossman Award for Excellence in Otolaryngology and the Armand J. Quick Award for Excellence in Biochemistry Research. He received a bachelor of arts in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University.
