Rationale and Goals

The optimal care of acutely ill and injured children requires advanced knowledge and skills which are not fully developed by residencies in either pediatrics or emergency medicine. Pediatric trainees have insufficient experience in areas such as resuscitation, toxicology, trauma, surgical problems/procedures, and prehospital care issues, while emergency medicine programs provide inadequate exposure to pediatric problems and the unique physiology and needs of children.

The goal of the fellowship is to train academic pediatric emergency specialists who will provide expert pediatric emergency care, supervise others who provide such care, teach and conduct research focused on improving the care of acutely ill and injured children.
