The human visual system is extremely susceptible to disease and damage; degeneration and damage occur in response to a variety of environmental and genetic insults. Unfortunately, in many cases the result is severe vision loss or even blindness. As researchers have begun to identify the specific disease mechanisms, it has become possible to design therapeutic strategies to intervene and restore vision. The future prospects of restorative therapies is bright.
