The Injury Research Center at the Medical College of Wisconsin (IRC-MCW) offers unique opportunities and resources for medical students interested in conducting research on prevention, care, and rehabilatation of injuries.
The IRC-MCW is one of ten federally funded Injury Research Centers in the nation. It is an interdepartmental collaboration of the Departments of Emergency Medicine, Family and Community Medicine, Neurosurgery, Surgery, Pediatrics, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, and the Department of Population Health. The Purpose of the IRC Student Summer Research Program is to allow the student to experience clinical research, expose the participants to the concept of INJURY BEING A PREVENTABLE DISEASE, and help the students understand research methods, organize presentations, and interpret outcomes.
The Objectives of this program are to apply principles of clinical research during summer project participation; describe the scope, consequences, and burden of injury as a public health problem affecting patients, families, and communities; articulate some physician role(s) in injury prevention; explain the differences in philosophy and prevention approaches between the error and preventable injury models; and demonstrate ability to interpret, communicate, and present research effectively.
Methods used are hands-on research participation with a faculty investigator in the Injury Research Center, summer seminar series and discussions, and organizing and presenting a summary of research participation at the conclusion of the program.
