Summary:  The NHAMCS covers the areas of ambulatory care not included in the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey: visits to hospital emergency departments and outpatient departments. The NHAMCS is organized into an emergency department file and an outpatient file and includes data items on demographics, hospital information, diagnoses, procedures, injury status, medications, and diagnostic services.
