Program Directors' Welcome

Welcome to the Medical College of Wisconsin Emergency Medicine Residency Program.

Established in 1978, our program was one of the first Emergency Medicine residency programs in the nation.

We are committed to excellence in patient care, education and research.  We are proud of our nationally and internationally recognized faculty, great teachers and fun, friendly residents.

Our educational program is progressive and innovative.

Our curriculum not only covers the essential topics of emergency medicine, but incorporates many other aspects including:

  • EMS
  • Simulation
  • Toxicology
  • Practice management
  • Communication
  • Presentation skills
  • Evidence based medicine
  • Ultrasound and much more

Written and oral board reviews are built into our program and to date we have a 100% board pass rate for first time test takers for more than 10 years.

Trauma and pediatric experience make our program strong

Froedtert & The Medical College of Wisconsin is the only adult Level I Trauma Center in eastern Wisconsin. Severely injured patients from as far away as Marinette and Clark counties in Wisconsin to McHenry and Cook counties in Illinois are brought to the Trauma Center for life-saving care. The Trauma Center provides regional leadership on trauma prevention and education offers many educational programs for faculty, residents and other healthcare professionals. Patients at the Trauma Center benefit from our expertise in emergency medicine.

Second year EM residents are at the head of the bed for all airways.  Third year EM residents are captain of the service every other week, sharing the responsibility with surgery.  We have a phenomenal relationship with our trauma surgery colleagues that reinforce the superb education experience of the EM resident.

The Emergency Department/Trauma Center at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin is one of the busiest pediatric emergency rooms in the nation, treating more than 60,000 children each year.  Parent’s magazine ranked emergency care at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin #3 in the nation in its 2013 Best Children's Hospitals survey and it was our commitment to providing the best and safest care that helped to earn this honor.  The Center is staffed by pediatric emergency medicine specialists and nurses with extensive pediatric emergency training who provide treatment for illnesses and injuries ranging from asthma to trauma.

A great place to live and learn

Froedtert and Children’s Hospital are located on the beautiful campus of the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center.  All demographic groups are represented on this campus, so residents do not have to rotate at multiple hospitals to see the wide spectrum of patients we see here.

The City of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, located four miles west of downtown Milwaukee is the home to the Milwaukee Regional Medical Center. Wauwatosa is centrally located within Metro Milwaukee, and is very accessible with direct access to Highway 45 and close proximity to Interstate 94.   The Milwaukee Regional Medical Center, a consortium of 6 health care institutions whose faculty, staff and patient care givers provide a full range of health care services to the residents of Wisconsin includes Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin who share a common mission of excellence in patient care, medical education, life science research, and community service.  Additionally with a fleet of four helicopters – based in Waukesha and Fond du Lac, WI, and McHenry, IL – the Flight For Life Transport System helps augment health care delivery systems on a local and regional level.  With all these groups represented on one beautiful campus residents do not have to travel far to see a broad spectrum of southeastern Wisconsin’s diverse population.

There is much more to learn about this great program.  Browse around our site, drop us an e-mail if you have questions and we hope to see you on the interview trail.
