Distinguished Service Award
The Distinguished Service Award (DSA) is presented each year to no more than three faculty or staff members of the Medical College of Wisconsin. The Award is conferred during the annual Commencement ceremony, and serves to recognize significant and distinguished contributions to the College.

Any member of the MCW faculty may submit nominations for this award. Nominees are reviewed and recipients are selected by the Commencement Honors Committee, which is comprised of former DSA recipients.

If you would like to submit one or more nominees for consideration, please forward the following information for each candidate:

1) A letter of nomination, describing the candidate and reasons for nomination (for example: commitment, dedication, consistent excellence, quality of contributions to the College).

2) One or more additional letters of support from other faculty.

3) A current copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae.

Deadline for submission of nominations will be in early December of each year, notifications of actual date will be communicated starting in late October.

President's Diversity Award

This award honors individuals or a group of individuals from within the MCW community at large who have made an outstanding contribution to making MCW a more inclusive and diverse educational and work environment.

The Diversity Awards Selection Committee will select up to two award recipients per year. Award recipients will be recognized during the MCW Convocation and the President's Underrepresented in Medicine Reception for Students, Faculty, and Community Physicians held in the fall of each year. In addition to a $2,500 monetary award, recipients' names will be inscribed on a plaque and recognized in various MCW and community publications.

Vitality Award

The Faculty Vitality Award is an annual award designed to support formal scholarly endeavors undertaken on a concentrated but less intensive basis than a traditional sabbatical, allowing for the continuation of other professional responsibilities concurrent with the period of the award.

The intended purpose of the award is to promote academic revitalization, career development, and renewed productivity. The Vitality Award provides limited salary support for protected time to enhance or develop mastery on a specific theme related to one's clinical, research, and/or administrative responsibilities. Projects must directly relate to one or more of the core missions of the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Eligibility is open to all faculty with six or more year's service to the College. Prior approval of the Department Chairman is required. Applications are reviewed annually with the final decisions made by the Dean.

Society of Teaching Scholars

Conceptualized in the late 1980s by Herbert M. Swick, MD, then the MCW Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Society's mission was to "by example and action, stimulate innovation in medical education and represent excellence in education in faculty forums". Since its twelve charter members were installed at the college-wide convocation exercises in September 1990, the Society has elected three new members annually over its fifteen year history, with fifty-seven installed members drawn from fifteen different specialties/disciplines.

For more information, please visit the Teaching Scholars webpage here.

ELAM Program

Established in 1995, ELAM offers an intensive one-year program of leadership training with extensive coaching, networking and mentoring opportunities aimed at expanding the national pool of qualified women candidates for leadership in academic medicine, dentistry, and public health.

The ELAM Program has been specially developed for senior women faculty at the associate or full professor level who demonstrate the greatest potential for assuming executive leadership positions at academic health centers within the next five years. While attaining higher levels within the AHC executive ranks is the program's primary focus, ELAM encourages its graduates to pursue the full diversity of roles within their organizations that offer opportunities for leadership.

The effectiveness of ELAM's distinctive approach to leadership preparation is broadly recognized within the academic health community, with more that 90 percent of U.S. medical schools and 60 percent of U.S. dental schools represented among the program's graduates. 51 schools have had 5 or more fellows and 11 schools have had 10 or more.

ELAM graduates now number more that 600 and serve in numerous leadership positions - department head through university president - at nearly 110 U.S. and Canadian academic health centers. Currently, 4 of the 15 women deans at U.S. medical schools, 6 of the 12 women deans at U.S. dental schools, and 2 of the 12 women deans at U.S. public health schools are ELAM alumnae.

Acceptance into ELAM is determined through an annual competitive selection process, in which approximated 54 candidates are chose each year.

Outstanding Faculty Service Award

Faculty provide service to MCW through their work on the MCW Faculty Council. Through these faculty members' efforts, we advance MCW's mission to (1) be a national leader in education and development of the next generations of physicians and scientists; (2) discover and translate new knowledge in the biomedical sciences; (3) provide cutting-edge interdisciplinary and compassionate clinical care of the highest quality; and (4) improve the health of the communities we serve.

The Faculty Career Development Committee (FCDC) seeks to affirm the importance of this work by recognizing those individuals who have provided outstanding committee service during the academic year.

Selected faculty will receive a Faculty Service pin and recognition letter at a fall MCW Faculty Council meeting and their names will be listed in various MCW publications (e.g., annual convocation program, MCW InfoScope website).

For more information on this award, please contact the Office of Faculty Affairs at 414-955-8666 or at facultyaffairs@mcw.edu.
