Coalition Builders

Coalition Builders has the mission to foster a culture of awareness, effective communication and respect among the Medical College of Wisconsin community by facilitating skill-building and encouraging a broadened definition and deeper understanding of diversity.

The vision is to create a Medical College of Wisconsin community where all individuals feel safe, respected, valued and empowered to promote social equity and inclusion.

Our values include humanity, integrity, respect.

In 2013, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) became an affiliate of the National Coalition Building Institute (NCBI), an international non-profit leadership development network.  Since 1984, NCBI has been dedicated to the elimination of racism and other forms of oppression.  While each affiliate is independently responsible for sustaining their vitality, the international network of over 60 chapters shares methodology, curriculum and best practices.

The MCW NCBI leadership team, known as the Coalition Builders, is trained to provide NCBI workshops on our campus.  Currently, the Coalition Builders are comprised of eleven MCW faculty and staff who serve as active trainers.  Each of the team members participated in a three day Train-the-Trainer to develop skills to lead a workshop.

To accomplish its mission, Coalition Builders regularly offers NCBI's award-winning Social Inclusion and Equity Workshop which has been presented to thousands of groups throughout the world, including schools, colleges and universities, corporations, government agencies, trade unions, religious institutions, and community organizations.

Over 200 MCW employees have received support and leadership development through the Leadership for Social Inclusion and Equity Workshops.  These workshops consist of a series of activities and opportunities to learn about our own identities as well as those with whom we work.  Participants will hear stories of how oppression and discrimination have impacted themselves and other colleagues. Participants will also  explore tools to effectively dialogue with an individual who has made a hurtful comment, joke, or slur.
