Women in Science Award Winners

Women scientists at the Medical College of Wisconsin are advancing biomedical research and finding innovative solutions to treat injuries, cure disease, and improve patient care. The College celebrates their accomplishments with the Women Pioneers in Research Award.

2007 Winner - Elizabeth R. Jacobs, MD |
Dr. Jacobs is Professor and Chief of the Pulmonary Division in the Department of Medicine. She is researching the role of fatty acids in the body and the affect these acids have on blood vessels in the body, especially the lungs.

2008 Winner - Paula Traktman, PhD |
Dr. Traktman is the Walter Schroeder Professor and Chairman of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics and Senior Associate Dean for Research Development. Her research is on the life cycle of a complex DNA virus (the vaccinia virus) which is closely related to the smallpox virus. Her work has implications for the development of antiviral drugs and advancing knowledge in fields such as infertility and cancer.

2009 Winner - Ann Nattinger, MD, MPH |
Dr. Nattinger is the Lady Ryder's Professor of Breast Cancer Research and Interim Chair of the Department of Medicine. She is nationally recognized for her investigations into the trajectory of care for women with breast cancer, including issues affecting treatment, survivorship, and outcomes. She has published several landmark studies of factors involved in the choice of treatment options by breast cancer patients.

2010 Winner - Jung Ja Kim, PhD |
Dr. Kim is a Professor of Biochemistry. She studies the structures of enzymes involved in fat metabolism and their relationship to diseases such as MCAD deficiency, a serious condition in infants and children linked to vomiting, lethargy, hypoglycemic coma, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
