• MCW Pediatric Pathologist awarded 2012 Fogarty GEOHealth Hubs Planning Grant

• On November 5, 2012, the Einstein’s Global Health Center (GHC) hosted a national conference that brought together administrators and faculty running prominent U.S. academic global health centers (GHC) to share their hard-won wisdom with colleagues at other institutions interested in organizing programs of their own. MCW Global Health Program Manager, Tifany Frazer served on the steering committee.

• Paula North, MD, PhD, Professor and Chief of Pediatric Pathology, has been awarded a 2012 Fogarty GEOHealth Hubs Planning Grant along with partners, Dr. Luis Minaya of the Peruvian NIH (Institute Nacional de Salud) and Luis Vasquez, MD, President of the Yantalo Peru Foundation.  
• Laura Cassidy, MS, PhD, author on article entitled: Untreated surgical conditions in Sierra Leone: a cluster randomised, cross-sectional, countrywide survey
• Cecilia Hillard, PhD, Director Neuroscience Research Center and Professor Pharmacology awarded a grant from the United States-Israel Binational Science Foundation with Dr. Akirav Irit, Haifa University to understand role of endogenous cannabinoid signaling in fear extinction and learning.
• Jill Owczarzak, PhD, Assistant Professor Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine and investigator in the Center for AIDS Intervention Research received multi-million dollar, four-year grant from NIH to implement and evaluate evidence-based HIV prevention strategies in Ukraine. View feature

• UW doctor helping build hospital in Ecuador Dr. David Gaus featured in Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The article announces Andean Health & Development's second hospital project in Santo Domingo, Ecuador, and the expansion of the training program for local Family Physicians.

• The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy has elected Kulwinder Dua, MD, DMSc, FACP, FRCP to serve on their International Committee. Dr. Dua is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

International Photo Competition

The Medical College of Wisconsin’s Global Health Program is kicking off with a bang! As part of its week-long launch across the MCW campus, the Global Health Organization is hosting an international photo competition to display the work of our talented medical community. We are seeking your photos from health-related trips abroad.  These photos will be exhibited all week in the lobby outside the MCW cafeteria from November 28 – December 2. The public will vote for 3 talented winners who will be awarded a prize!

Father Alex Busuttil, executive director of Alto Cayma Mission from southern Peru is visiting the Milwaukee area.  On the outskirts of Arequipa, Peru is a community driven to improve its health. The Alto Cayma mission provides consistent and culturally sensitive health care delivery which includes a primary care clinic with dental and eye care, a day care center for children, a mobile meals program, vocational programs, a community center with training classrooms and a computer lab.

This mission in Alto Cayma has had a significant amount of support from entities from Wisconsin Rotarians, Mt. Mary College and the Columbia College of Nursing and the Affinity Health Care System Foundation of the Fox Valley.

Participants who attend this lecture will:

1. Gain knowledge about the health issues of the Alto Cayma region
2. Learn about global health initiatives being conducted in rural Arequipa
3. Hear about opportunities to get involved
